One way CBD for runners can be utilized is for endurance training. In fact, I incorporated CBD into my training regimen for the 2018 New York City Marathon.
I grew up in a family of runners–but until I was an adult, I hated running. My dad was an elite runner who participated in the Boston Marathon in the 1980s. My siblings and I were all athletic; dance was my activity of choice.
When I turned 30, my younger brother signed up for the Chicago Marathon. My younger sister ran a half-marathon. In true sibling fashion–and as the oldest–I thought, “Well, I can’t not do a race now!”
Training for a marathon was totally different from running on a treadmill. And because I live on the West Coast, I was able to train by the ocean. After I ran my first race, I was hooked–and between 2010 and 2013, I ran five half- and full marathons.
My Introduction to CBD
In February 2018, I attended the Integrative Healthcare Symposium in New York, where I met Elixionl medical advisor Dr. Philip Blair. Dr. Blair spoke with me extensively about CBD and its vast array of nutritional properties, and I was instantly intrigued. Five months later, I became part of the Elixinol team as Regional Sales Manager (West).
After that, I started using pretty much all of our products and began sharing CBD with my friends and family. Around that time–that same week, actually–I decided to sign up to run the NYC Marathon.
Incorporating CBD For Marathon Training
When I had previously trained for races, my routine involved icing, eating a clean diet, foam rolling, taking glucosamine supplements–all the basics.
But when I began training for the NYC Marathon, I learned that I could put Elixionl’s Hemp Extract Liposomes in water (the encapsulated liposome formula is water soluble and highly bioavailable). During my long runs–anywhere from 6 to 23 miles–I started putting a serving of CBD in my camelback. After training, I would use Hemp Balm to soothe my muscles (I also incorporated cryotherapy with the balm).
Results of CBD for Endurance Training
Not long after I began using CBD in my training regimen, I started seeing a difference in my recovery. I experienced results even early on in my long runs.
When you’re training for a marathon, you run 10Ks and half-marathons throughout your training period in order to get into the endurance mindset. During that time, I checked in with Dr. Blair. Over the course of the conversation, he asked whether I had noticed a difference in my time.
I’ve never been a fast runner; distance is what I prefer. In April 2018, after I’d begun incorporating CBD into my fitness training, I got third place in a 10K. I had never placed before. The only lifestyle factor I had changed was the addition of CBD into my training.
The most significant result I experienced after incorporating CBD into my fitness training was recovery. I incorporated stretching and cross-training into my marathon training in addition to running. But even though I followed a solid and varied routine, those long runs on Saturday mornings left me feeling stiff and sore on Sunday.
The combination of post-workout Hemp Balm and cryotherapy supported my recovery, helping me to wake up feeling only slightly sore. I thought, “If I can wake up and feel like there’s nothing major going on with my body after running 18 miles, there’s something to this.”
Running the NYC Marathon
The NYC Marathon is the biggest in the world when it comes to international participation. Fifty thousand runners and 2 million spectators come from all over the world to be a part of it. I decided to go big or go home–and because I had planned for this to be my last marathon, I wanted to be part of the biggest.
For me, this race is among the top 10 experiences I’ve had in my life so far. The experience and the sheer energy of the city on that day are hard to put into words. Two million people from all over the world coming together for one day to experience something positive? That’s pretty incredible.
The marathon course runs through all 5 of New York City’s boroughs, ending in Central Park. It’s amazing to have such a massive crowd cheering you on as you race toward the finish. It’s hard work, but the energy of the participants and the crowd propels you forward every step of the way.
The Future of Endurance Training with CBD
As CBD continues to grow in popularity and gain international attention, I believe many more athletes will begin incorporating it into their fitness training routines.
Throughout my marathon training and the race itself, CBD helped me experience:
- Temporary relief of inflammation
- Decreased recovery time
- Faster running time (due to quality rest and alleviation of anxiety and inflammation)
- Relaxation before sleep for a greater quality of rest
- Relief of temporary anxiety due to pre-race jitters (I preferred CBD Capsules for this!)
We still have so much more to learn about this life-changing supplement. The ability to experience better daily performance, a sense of balance, and feeling like myself faster are all major wins in my book.
