What is Delta-9?
Delta-9 refers to a cannabinoid molecule called delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, also known as Delta-9 THC or just THC. THC is one of the 500 molecules (substance and different cannabinoid) present within the cannabis plant. Marijuana and hemp are both part of the cannabis family, and Delta-9 THC can be derived from each one.
“Delta-9 THC is the most researched constituent in cannabis and studies have shown all kinds of great results,” says Dr. Dave Gordon, MD, IFMCP, ABoIM. “Delta-9 THC in small amounts can have great wellness benefits, including increased feelings of pleasure and happiness, along with stress relief support."
What are the benefits of Delta-9?
Dr. Dave says that just like CBD, THC works with our endocannabinoid system (ECS), the biological system that is related to appetite, metabolism, memory and more.
Researchers are still working to understand the complexities of the endocannabinoid system, but one major function of the system is to maintain homeostasis.
“We primarily get the benefits of THC because it stimulates the endocannabinoid system (ECS), our own internal cannabis system,” he says. “Stimulating the ECS can help our bodies achieve its ideal state. It can address inflammation from exercise or balance out an over-active nervous system. THC can be a powerful addition to your wellness routine to help achieve those goals.
Is Delta-9 legal?
Yes, Delta-9 is federally legal when it is derived from hemp in concentrations of less than .3% by dry weight. The 2018 Farm Bill removed hemp as a federally controlled substance and defined hemp and hemp-derived products that contain less than .3% THC dry weight, federally legal in the country. However, several states have passed regulations limiting Delta-9 products.
Elixinol’s Unwind gummies are federally legal because they are naturally derived from the hemp plant and contain less than .3% THC dry weight. How do we calculate a legal serving size of Delta-9 THC in our Unwind gummies?
- Unwind gummies weigh 3.25grams or 3,250milligrams
- 003 (0.3%) x 3250mg = 9.75mg
- One Unwind gummy can contain up to 9.75 mg of hemp-derived Delta 9 THC, legally.
- Our Unwind Delta-9 gummies only contains 3mg of Delta-9 THC, well below the legal amount.
Are Elixinol’s Unwind Gummies intoxicating?
Each Unwind gummy continues 15mg of CBD and 3mg of THC, which may be enough to feel intoxicated or “high.” Everyone’s tolerance level for THC and CBD is different. For anyone new to THC, we recommend taking half a gummy to start and to wait at least 2 hours to feel the effects before taking more. Starting at a low serving size and working up will help to achieve desired effects of Delta-9 THC.
“Intoxication and adverse effects are all serving size related,” Dr. Dave says. “What most people don’t understand is that small amounts of THC can provide a wealth of benefits, while avoiding the negatives of consuming larger amounts. If you’re looking to relax, enjoy your present moment, and be more comfortable, small amounts of Delta-9 THC can help achieve that, and risks can be minimized or avoided by staying at these low amounts.”
